2021 OYL Safety Protocols and Best Practices

1 Apr 2021 by Dave Sanford

Protocols for Contests:
Home Teams will share their facility guidelines with visiting teams a minimum of 48 hours prior to games. Visiting teams are required to comply with all of home teams protocols. Protocols must be consistent with what is outlined in the attached OHA document below at a minimum. The more detailed that can be provided in regards to entry, exit, etc. the better.

Enforcement of COVID Protocols:
It is not the responsibility of the officials or youth officials to enforce COVID protocols it is the job of the home club to designate a COVD Monitor for each event.

Masks:
At this time OHA and the State of Oregon require masks to be worn on the fields while participating in, coaching or watching youth sports. There are no exceptions to this rule, everyone needs to be masked unless they are hydrating and players are encouraged to social distance from their teammates prior to hydrating. This rule will not be reconsidered unless OHA makes policy changes.

Health Screening:
Players should complete a team monitored health screening prior to attending activities each day and be prepared to show proof of a completed screening on arrival. There are several apps that will help serve this purpose or you can create your own using a google doc. Here is an example of the one used by the Oregon Men’s Lacrosse League.

Temperature Checks:
Teams should take players temperatures upon arrival at activity and verify temperature lower than 100.3 Degrees prior to participation. Record keeping of this activity should be maintained for two weeks.

Mouthguards:
The expectation is that players will wear mouthguards underneath their masks. We understand the challenges but also recognize the important in wearing a mouthguard to prevent dental injuries and reduce risk of concussion.

Post Game Handshakes and Pre Game Line-Ups will be eliminated. Celebrations and high-fives during games are discouraged.

Face-Offs:
Officials will follow new US Lacrosse guidelines for face-offs. These new safety guidelines will lead to more violations but are intended to minimize the time spent at center X by players and officials. We are asking all coaches and players to be respectful of the challenges the officials face in this situation and show good sportsmanship at all times.

Fans at Practices and Games:
This rule is at the discretion of the home team and their facilities. All fans are expected to follow protocols without question.

COVID monitor:
The home team is responsible for identifying a COVID monitor who will serve as the point person for any issues that arise during a practice, contest or other activity.
